Newton’s Epic Performance Sends Cards Through the Roof

Today was a big day for the 2011 rookie class, with many of the top guys playing extremely well. In fact, Im pretty sure that kickoff for this season may be one of the best rookie weekends I can remember, and its not over yet. Easily the biggest story of Sunday’s slate was Cam Newton’s explosion, setting a record for a rookie debut, and out playing Jimmy Clausen’s whole 2010 Season in one game. Unbelievable to say the least, especially from me who thought he was not suited to be a good NFL QB. Even though this is only one game, you can see why the collective hater group has some questions on whether he will continue to be a crazy reach for the number 1 pick in the draft.

In addition to throwing for over 400 yards and 2 TDs in the loss to the Cards, he also ran in a TD as well. When you come out of the gates and put up those kind of numbers, your cards jump like Evel Knievel over the grand canyon.

Take a look at these recent auctions:

In addition to affecting the prices of the rare pulls, its also raised the buying prices of higher numbered cards like this. Sam Bradford was hitting these types of prices during the final stretch of the 2010 season, but he never really had a game early on that brought on this type of feeding frenzy.

With Randall Cobb’s performance being one that everyone thought would be the best of week one, its not as clear now. Newton did throw a pick and get sacked a few times, but that is expected with a team of the quality that Carolina puts on the field. They actually had a shot to beat a team expected to win their division this year, and that says something to me. Im not sold yet, but this performance is tough to ignore.

  1. Well I sold my Newton Platinum base rookie for $10. Pretty happy to get to share in the hysteria after a big game. Should listed it for $20….

  2. “its not as clear now”—-

Are you actually saying that it could be debated between Newton and Cobb for who was the best Rookie performance of week 1?

Hands down it is Newton and there is no debate on it…he blew Peyton Manning’s rookie debut record for yardage by over 100 yds and threw in 2 tds and a rushing td…

I didn’t think Newton would amount to anything either, but if he can even manage to do 60% of what he did this week he will be impressive….I am not ready to roll with him as the next great QB but this performance is one for the ages when it comes to rookie QB debuts.

  3. or his Exquisite unsigned rookie that sold for $200+ yesterday…..what will his SPA or other high end UD rookie sell for??

  4. Oh and you know, he is now on pace for 7000+ yards and 32+ touchdown passes this year and 16 more TD’s on the ground — Oh and the team would be 0-16. Just a thought…

  5. People here in Charlotte have Cam Mania. I was impressed with his performance, but it’s just one game. The question is, “can the guy do it consistently?” Only time will tell. I was a Cam doubter, but I def. want him to do well and help my Panthers.
