Robert Griffin III Running Up the Score With Leaf Metal Autos

When Leaf Metal was released last week, there were a number of players that were slated to make a huge impact on the hobby with the first autos of the year. Being that Washington recently mortgaged their future on Robert Griffin III, its easy to see why collectors are much more likely to plunk down as much as they have been for his autographs. Although its blatanly apparent that these values will not sustain themselves long term, it wont stop people from buying until officially licensed stuff is released.

I also have to believe that Luck’s absence in non-Press Pass products contribute to a situation like this, as there is no diluting the hype on a set that looks good for not having a license to produce NFL cards.

Considering that Washington’s fan base is rabid, and the Skins do have potential to be a good team this year if Griffin plays as well as he is expected to, Griffin could be a chase and then some for collectors this year. Too bad its a team with probably the ugliest team persona in the history of sports. He could honestly play for any other team and have a better brand to back him, as that logo and jersey is just absolutely awful. I dont know why I harp on this, as the aesthetics of the team’s branding should not have this type of effect on someone.

Regardless, collectors love RGIII as much as the scouts, and I dont think that is going to change anytime soon. After seeing the preview for 2012 Topps, I can say I could not be more excited.

  1. ugliest team persona in sports? More like one of the most iconic IMHO…and I’m a Cowboys fan.

  2. I opened a case of this stuff last night hoping to hit some RGIII stuff. Unfortunately I didn’t get any but did score a nice Ryan Tannehill White Refractor 1/1 plus some other nice short prints. Overall, it was a pretty fun product to open but I imagine I’ll need to flip most of this stuff on eBay soon before the real rookie cards come out and the value diminishes. I was thinking of ordering another case but just saw the prices are about $100 more now.
