Topps Previews 2012 Museum Collection, and Mentions Five Star Baseball On The Horizon

Since their acquisition of the exclusive MLB license to produce trading cards with uniforms and logos, Topps’ results have been met with mixed reviews. Although they have had ENORMOUS amounts of success and national media attention around their lower end prospect products, higher end offerings havent been met with the same type of fan response. I have said on a few occasions that high end and baseball collectors are like oil and water, but after Tribute’s on card offerings, combined with previews of Museum Collection and the announcement of Five Star Baseball, things could be looking up.

Museum Collection is the continuation of these Cards from 2011 Topps Marquee, which have been selling for ridiculous money:

Stan Musial Marquee Museum Collection Auto 6/10

Roberto Alomar Marquee Museum Collection Auto /10

Everyone who reads this blog knows my man crush that I exude each time Five Star football has been released. When I heard that Five Star Baseball was going to be made as well, my heart jumped a little. A true Exquisite baseball never had the chance to be its own product, and when they were inserts in 2006 Upper Deck packs, most of them were sticker autos.

Now with Topps’ reinvigoration of on card content in baseball, I think the time for high end may be nigh! Consider me among the excited, as I have never been one to even think about jumping head first into a product like Five Star or museum collection, but there are some nice previews from the Topps twitter account that may show me a good reason to start.

Panini is trying their best to make a splash in baseball without licensing from MLBP, and so far, I havent seen any reason why someone should go buy packs of cards containing subjects in street clothes. When a collector can have direct access to some great looking on card autographed content in true licensed set, it doesnt get any sweeter.

Five Star continues to rule the roost in terms of design and autograph content in Football, and I am pretty damn sure it can be replicated in Baseball, even with a lot of players autographs valued below their equivalents in other sports. Think about it, if Bryce Harper is called up at any time during the year, he will have the ability to be included in a set like this. Its a nice prospect to consider.

Bring it on!

  1. I have all confidence topps will fuck up five star bb.
They can’t get triple threads, marquee, tier none right & they had a horrible product in topps sterling.

how many angel pagan, gio gonzalez, “roll em tight” jeffress autos do we need in this product?

  2. Dear God, considering how much those mid-90s Yankee teams meant to me as a kid, that dual of Mattingly/O’Neil might seriously make me cry. These look awesome!

  3. I really don’t think Topps will f@#k up 5 Star Baseball. If they design it like the football, it should look pretty sweet. Topps has been great at putting more on-card autos in their products, which is a big deal to me. Also, this year’s Tribute set is actually pretty nice. Yes, some of their products were hit and miss last year, but they have a great template in 5 Star Football. As long as they follow that template, 5 Star Baseball should be pretty cool.
