2011 Panini Prime Signatures Would Make a Killer Subset

Panini released solicitation info today on a new product called 2011 Panini Prime Signatures. After seeing what they recently released in terms of information on Totally Certified, Im beginning to think they are just trying to get products out before the gun. It doesnt look like these are really fully baked ideas and concepts.

The difference between Totally and Ridiculously Certified Football, and Prime Signatures, is that these cards look pretty damn good. I ESPECIALLY like the Call to the Hall cards, as the way they are done with the HOF logo in the design is great. Its basically the same design with different colors than the one that came out last year in Classics. I very much enjoyed that design as well, so these are naturally on my list.

I also like the rookie autos with the full game photos and the white space, and with hard signed autographs, they should be pretty awesome looking. They are definitely up there in terms of Panini designs this year.

My problem?

Why is this its own stand alone product? This would be a great subset to add to another existing product. Having it on its own seems to be a bad idea, as I cant see this selling well. Collectors, despite the presence of some of the sticker veteran autos that are rare, wont be able to see this as a good value to bust. There isnt enough bang in the design. Even the previews look like this is a thinly conceived idea, as there is no wow factor – just some great looking single signed cards. Other than that there isnt a lot going on here.

  1. I agree with you. The design is awesome. Current super stars or retired legend autos are 10-11:30 boxes (I like it). The box value will be dependent on the retail price. There are 30 boxes per case, so I assume box prices will retail in the $50 to $100 range (I know, that’s a wide range). At $50 these would be a huge hit. If it’s closer to $100 per box, we’ll see how the box busters respond.

Topps Inception Football sold well in the $90 to $100 range but have two rookie autos and one jersey/patch per box. Panini states Prime Signatures boxes have one auto, two base cards numbered to 499 and an additional base card or insert. This “insert” would add to the box value, especially if it is an auto or sick patch.

Upper Deck came out with All-Time Greats Basketball this year, which sells well in the $300 to $350 per box range with only 4 cards (one Auto). These sell well because all autos are top tier basketball stars and Michael Jordan autos are one in six boxes.

Release date is February 15th, so it will be a few weeks before I receive the Panini info sheet and order form. This product looks great and has my interest.

  2. Well, if I’m gonna dish it out, it’s got to include credit where credit is due. This design is on the right track. Keep this up. … Still never buying panini products again, though. Already got a couple grand tied up in Topps end of season releases. It’s kind of awesome to know a product you haven’t even seen a sell sheet for will crush stuff like this as they try to throw whatever the hell they can at customers and see what sticks.

  3. Got the Panini sell sheet and order form today. The suggested retail price on this product is $60. The design is great. Super Star Autos and Retired Legend Autos fall 10 or 11 per 30 box case. I am ready to give my prediction. Panini Prime Signatures Football will be a HUGE hit.

  4. Do we know if the “insert” is necessarily an auto/GU? If not, then this is a one-auto box for $60. I agree it looks good and with this rookie class the overall value is probably there. If there are 2 “hits” then this might be pretty good.
