Awe Struck – 2012 Upper Deck SPX Shadow Box Cards Impress As Usual

I love me some Shadow Box cards, regardless of whether or not they are NCAA or NFL like Topps Strata should be like. Upper Deck’s 2012 Shadow Box cards, after a year off, are back with a tour de force unlike we have ever seen.

This year, not only are there some awesome looking types just like they used to be, but they now have the option of interchangable slot cards that can be collected for each player. Although these arent the same without NFL branding and full hard signed autographs on top, they are still the nicest cards that Upper Deck does.

Check these out:

2012 Shadow Box Robert Griffin III Shadow Box SP

2012 Shadow Box Barry Sanders Shadow Box SP

2012 Shadow Box Aaron Rodgers Shadow Box SP

Although no autographs have been posted yet, I am still holding out hope. These cards are really Upper Deck’s bag, and I am loving that they are back. Although I am not going to be buying any of them, for my personal collection, these would be on my list if I did collect college stuff.

  1. What’s the deal with Panini and Topps being the only ones who possess the NFL license? Is there a restriction the NFL put on trading card companies so that only two companies can have it? I just don’t understand why Sage, UD, Leaf all do not have the license.

  2. I like them, but I have a problem with the slot cards having pictures that are hidden by the full player picture. Both the Sanders and Rodgers are cropped too far to the right and are underneath the other picture. This is silly oversight.

Also, the slot cards should have the ability to insert all at once to build a complete card. Each slot card would bring a different element to complete the design. This may be the case as I haven’t been following, but it didn’t look like it. The hardest slot card to find would obviously be the auto.

    Just an idea.

  3. Upper Deck doesn’t have the money and is being sued by the NFLPA for failure to pay NFL players. Would you give them a license?

Upper Deck has always made the best looking cards however concern over UD staying in business will soon have their top designers looking for work at Panini, Leaf and possibly Topps as they have already hired away some of the good ones.

By the way, ever wonder why it has taken soooo long for 2011 Exquisite FB to come out?
The 2011 players know they won’t get paid or won’t get paid on time so they won’t sign
until they are paid up front. It must really suck to work that hard on a set and it doesn’t get released because you don’t have the money.

  4. yeah I wouldn’t give them the license either. So Leaf and Sage could have the NFL license themselves but just probably do not have the money to obtain it?
