Panini Releases First Pics of World Record Card

Before National Treasures was released, we got news that Panini was attempting to create the worlds largest trading card ever produced. Their idea was to make this card a booklet with 36 players from the Rookie Premiere, and now that we are seeing the pictures, im not sure what they were thinking. Aside from the fact that the card is ridiculous for the sake of ridiculous, there are quite a few reasons why the execution was less than poor. Most importantly, this card proves the fact that innovation isn’t really always a good thing.

First off, the autographs on the patches is not a good thing as we can see. Cards signed on patches tend to bleed into the fabric over time, and we can see from the pics on Panini’s website, it’s already started to happen on a few of the cards. More importantly, having jumbo signed patches doesn’t leave much room for a good looking design, but we will get to that in a second.

The worst part of this whole thing has to be the display properties of a card like this. If Panini had done the smart thing and linked the cards on the short end instead of the long end, it would have easily been something that could, in THEORY, be displayed on a long wall. Now that we see how its done, no one is going to be able to do anything with this piece, let alone protect it from the elements.

Additionally, I really dislike the design of each of the individual cards, as it looks like everything was just thrown together at the last minute, typical of Panini’s M.O. Many of the patches aren’t even aligned correctly in the window, which hides part of the signature, bleeding already or not. Its not a good situation to be in when, not if, the five collectors sell these cards.

This is obviously a stunt to bring on more national publicity, which probably isn’t a good thing when your picture is the card on the ground unprotected, next to an employee. Poor form Panini, poor form.

  1. From what I saw, it’s an interesting concept, but it also makes the word “gimmick” seem tame by comparison.

  2. If panini had a shred of decency they would create some kind of display piece for this, otherwise whoever gets this is inheriting a several hundred dollar problem.

  3. Tracy Hackler,or whatever his name is, in another stupid video. Is anybody else sick of this guy yet. His infamous fixed boxbreak videos on Beckett weren’t enough, now Panini decides he should be on the payroll. That is not a card,it is like 20 cards taped together. That is a shitload os ‘Event Used Patches’. CNN probably won’t mention that when this thing goes global.
Remember that time some guy walked into Beckett headquarters in Dallas with 270 Wayne Gretzky RC’s to be graded and the idiots at Beckett laid the cards in a pile on a table and posted the pic. That was a fun night on the old Beckett boards when that photo was posted. A lot of us got suspended that night for mocking Beckett.
Now this glorified sticker company thinks it’s a good idea to lay a World Record card on the floor and film it. This is why your stickers will outsell your sports cards every year. Panini just doesn’t get it.
Commenting on the signed ‘Event Used’ Jsy patches isn’t even worth the time. If they knew anything over at Panini, then these signed Event Used patches would have never even been produced.
So to sum up – Panini Stickers kick ass…Everything else Panini is a waste of pleather, stickers, foilboard,Event Used Jerseys, and Mexican laborers who design their products.

  4. I usually totally agree with your opinions on card design for Panini. I don’t think you can fault them for making an impressive card like this. Maybe it was put together at the last second, and there was probably a better way to create this card. Saying all of that, I would much rather have something like this, an extremely interesting concept card, in the product the way it is because it was a last-second idea than not in the product at all. That’s my two cents.

  5. If anyone who pulled this card really wanted to stick it to Panini and/or BGS, they would drive this one to Texas and try to have it graded. Why not make a ridiculous situation even more ridiculous?

  6. I just heard the card was found to be responsible for the JFK shooting, the invention of New Coke (and Crystal Pepsi to a lesser extent), said nice things about Castro, kept M*A*S*H on the air those extra 2 years it should not have been, put something on the road to lay down Petrino’s bike, and organized the Saints bounty program.

  7. If I pull this… I’m taking an x-acto knife and making 36 ultra-rare 1/1 cards. This is a perfect example of cardfoolery.

  8. Yet more evidence that Panini is the frat house of card companies. I imagine their business meetings sound very much like Bill and Ted after a long stoner session…

  9. What a stupid card, stupid video, stupid music. Epic fail on all counts. The cards themselves, if broken up would be nice but whats the use of a card that cant be displayed, cant even be view without fear of damaging it. WTF panini, you guys are idiots.
