Tebow Settles In As the Golden Bronco God to the Delight of Everyone

If you have been reading this blog for any period of time, you know my feelings regarding Tim Tebow, and his prospects as a successful NFL QB. Now that he has taken over as the starter in Denver, you can imagine my reaction when I hear people say “The guy is a winner! He is going to win!” I dont think he is going to win solely because he is a winner at life, nor because he plays for a good team. I think he will have the same level of success as any serviceable starter in that role, as being a winner is the most relative description someone can give.

Obviously, the general collecting base disagrees with me, and on a crazy scale. Since the end of the game last week, his cards have gone off like a rocket, surpassing just about every single rookie from his class and this current one as well.

Check out these absolutely ridiculous prices:

2010 Exquisite Rookie Auto Patch /75

2010 Five Star Logo Patch Booklet 1/1

2010 National Treasures Rookie Auto Patch /99

Despite the fact that he does not have the performance, mechanics or potential, in my opinion, to be a top earner, he is. People love the guy, and I get why they do. He is the Steve Rogers of the NFL. A happy-go-lucky, “never say die” underdog, who seemingly overcame everything to be a football player. Bravo. Slow clap. That means nothing when defenses figure out his running around with his head cut off approach, and his completion percentage settles in around 40% with 8 picks.

That’s my prediction, as his success in the spread offense in Florida’s system has NEVER translated to the pro game for anyone else. You want to go spend 150 bucks on his auto right now? Go right ahead, fine by me. But im sure that buying in on the Penthouse level instead of the ground floor will catch up with you. It will happen. Even if he brings the Broncos to an 8-8 record this year, how much higher will his cards go? I cant say they will jump that much more. Regardless of how you feel about him as a player or as a person, its not a good idea to buy high and sell low. I know this from personal experience, and I realize that its tough to resist temptation. My willpower in this case is absolutely non-existant. However, I only buy certain cards of certain teams. I buy because I like, not to invest. I have to believe there are a lot of dumb investors flinging themselves at the Tebow bandwagon, hoping to get a front seat.

  1. I’m just happy he’s finally starting so this whole thing can be put to rest. I don’t think he has the tools to be a NFL quarterback but now it’s all on display for everyone to see. No more speculation. If the Broncos were smart, they would tone down the offense and install some college-style stuff like the Panthers have for Cam Newton.

  2. If he plays as well as everyone is saying he will, Ill eat my words. Ill post exactly why I was wrong. Not afraid of that happening though.

  3. I have a feeling people buying his cards now are not “investing” in his card, but mer collecting his cards. Investors bought up his cards the last two months.

Again, someone who thinks Tim cant throw the ball. The guy put up better “passing” numbers than Peyton Manning. Never mind what he did running. Is he a better “passer” than Peyton? Not even close. But what he does with his legs, buying receivers time, or taking a busted play and turning it into a 1st down more than makes up for not being the most accurate passer.

  4. Here’s what I don’t understand about the speculators who drive the cards of hyped prospects to insane prices….how high do they think the prices of these types of cards can go over the long run? Do they have even the most basic understanding of microeconomics (i.e. supply and demand)?

Best case scenario…Tebow fulfills all the hype and becomes a legend on par with Unitas, Bradshaw, Montana, Aikman, Brady, etc. By the time he retires he still has hundreds of 1/1 cards, and thousands of cards overall. He’s signed tens of thousands of autographs and has tens of thousands of relic cards floating around. Collectors interests have long since moved on to other players. Where is the price support for his cards going to come from?

  5. Look at Tom Brady. Plent of his autos out there, even the cheapest versions are in the $200 range.

  6. I’m conflicted with Tebow. I hate Florida, and have no love for the Broncos. But for whatever reason I want to see this guy do well. Maybe it’s because he’s had so many negative things said about his game, maybe it’s because I bought up a bunch of his stuff for cheap and I’m cashing in on Tebow Mania on Ebay.

Whichever it is, I hope he goes nuts against Miami so I can make a ton of money on his stuff and falls apart against my Lions the next week.

    Yeah, I’m that guy…

  7. Yes, but Brady is still active. As soon as he retires, prices of his cards will start to drop.

  8. I don’t think Tebow is as good or bad as everyone thinks. I’m not sold he’s an NFL quarterback either. I DO know he’s a winner and I just think people ought give him time to settle in and take his chances. I think he’ll be an NFL player… just not a QB. I’m a Bama fan and can’t stand Florida or the Broncos, but I’d still like him to do well too.
