Topps Unrivaled is Live, Underwhelming

One of two releases that are scheduled tomorrow have made it to ebay, and so far, Im pretty unimpressed with the way Unrivaled has turned out. I am not really a fan of how Topps laid out the box hits, and from what things were looking like from the preview, this is basically Topps Platinum minus the chrome and plus a few booklet cards that look horrid. Although I do like the use of the full game photos on some of the cards, the bordered stickers built into the design call attention to an area that should not be called attention to.

Either way, this looks far better than Limited, which looks awful this year, but because Unrivaled is a new product and limited has a large following that USED to include myself, I doubt anyone will notice that this product is even out.

Considering that Topps has done MUCH better than Panini in just about every element of design when you leave out abominations like Triple Shit, I hope Panini notices that they cant sit on the laurels of their previous designs for long. As I see it right now, because of the direction Topps is moving, we could easily have a new leader in design and overall look when Five Star hits shelves early next year.

Here is what has already hit the auction block:

Sam Bradford Rookie Auto /99 – This card is awful. Reminds me of that Bowman’s Best set form 2005 or whatever.

Jeremy Maclin Patch Auto – Like I said, Platinum – Chrome = Unrivaled.

Damian Williams Rookie Auto Patch /349

Montario Hardesty Rookie Auto Patch /249

Dexter McCluster Rookie Auto Jersey /349

Marcus Easley Rookie Auto /680

I guess once some of the bigger hits show up, there will be more to judge, but right now, it isnt looking good with it costing around the same price as the other, much more popular, 11/24 release. Since there are so many people out there who are mesmerized by the hideous foil that Limited will feature, as well as the “OMG SIK MOJOZZZ!!!111!!” patches that will come too, Unrivaled is going to flop, mark my words.

  1. I am very unimpressed with unrivaled. I agree that it is better than limited. I am still waiting for 5 star football to come out and I will get those singles instead of unrivaled and limited.

  2. I bought a box of Unrivaled, and to tell you the truth I’m having trouble even remembering what the cards looked like. I’m sorry I bought it. I got pretty much nothing out of it. A scrub rc auto (Crompton I think) and a couple of inserts wich I can’t even remember. Not even close to being worth what I paid for it ($125…….I’m in Alaska so cut me some slack). I recommend that you don’t buy these, even you Topps lovers out there. Oh the other thing about these is the parallel stupidity. The parallels don’t really even look that much different than the base set, the only reason I noticed them right off the bat was because Topps placed the foil number on the front of the cards. I honestly felt totally cheated after throwing the last foil wrapper in the trash. I almost threw everything else in as well, and I’m not being dramatic, I really considered it. There is probably some kid around here who would like them though.
